I've been living in Echo Park/ Silverlake for about 7 years now. It's definitely had it's fair share of dodgy moments and ups and downs. Usually the trouble is gang related, which makes sense because this has been their turf for so long. We are the trespassers here, and usually you'll never be in any sort of danger if you just keep to yourself.
But all of a sudden it's like a damned homeless bomb went off! There's homeless people all over the streets of Echo Park. Where are they coming from? Have you seen the side street next to the Vons in Echo Park? It's like Skid Row Jr. over there! Just two days ago I was walking down the mountain of stairs from our home to the street and there was some homeless dude just fully camped out on our stairs. Four days before that I had a homless man who looked like he had just had his face beaten in, knock on my divers side window as I was backing out of my driveway to ask me for change!! This was late at night too, and the dude came out of nowhere, maybe he was sleeping in front of my car and I didn't notice.
I thought gentrification made places into cool hip suburbia. But maybe it just brings in the night walkers looking for rich white artist kid spare change & hipster restaurant leftovers.
